The Bach Church in Arnstadt has two ‘historic’ organs. Since the original Wender instrument from 1703 had been subjected to numerous ‘improvements’ over time an essentially new organ was built in 1913 behind what remained of the Wender façade. But for the ‘Bach Year’ of 2000 Otto Hoffmann recreated a new organ in the style of the 18th century Wender with mechanical action and manual wind pumping as well as using the seven remaining original stops and the original plan documents. This instrument was place in the church’s reinstated third balcony where the original organ had been installed. The 1913 Steinmeyer was fully reconditioned and relocated behind grills in the second balcony.
