Mailbag: “Bore ‘em with Rorem?”

November 12, 2008

Dear Michael,

Your program of Ned Rorem - a more boring set of music I have never heard. More programs like this and you will lose me. I am sure there are many who will appreciate this kind of music. I can only hope this was a one time program.
Al

Al,

Everyone’s entitled to an opinion, so thank you for yours. Rorem’s music may not be to everyone’s liking, but it is not worthless (or boring, if you know how to listen to that sort of thing). In any event, unless you are a first-timer to PIPEDREAMS, you should know that the program content covers a lot of territory…something for everyone, eventually. There are people who complain when I play theater organ music, too, or transcriptions, or Cameron Carpenter.

Response from Al:

I appreciate your responding. I know everyone has their own likes and dislikes. I guess I am influenced by our local classical radio station WOSU. I really don’t know where they keep coming up with unlistenable music. But they do. I am a long time listener to Pipedreams. IncidentalIy, Theatre Organ music is a long time favorate. I am of an age that I can remember seeing and hearing it in the Fox Theatre in Detroit and of course Radio City Music Hall. I lived in New England and used to go to the Organ Guild concerts when ever they were available. Again, thanks for responding. So many times one writes and does not get any response.
Al
