Celebrating the pipe organ, the King of Instruments |
November 10, 2008
Dear Michael,
Did Radio City Music Hall have pipe organ music performances during the 40s? I while ago my father said that he enjoyed going there and listening to the music and would like to hear it again. I didn’t know where to start, so I didn’t pursue it. Can you recommend anything like this?
Mariko
Mariko,
The Radio City Music Hall boasts the largest organ every built by the Wurlitzer Organ Company, and it is still regularly used, though not as frequently as in prior days. It is incorporated in the stage shows put on in the hall, but is rarely heard in solo concerts, though recently a private individual (and well-heeled theater organ buff and player), Jack Moellman, hired the hall and held a solo concert there: New York Times article
The instrument also was featured in a special solo concert during the American Theatre Organ Society’s national convention in the summer of 2007. For information regarding its present daily use, best to contact the RCMH directly.
