Celebrating the pipe organ, the King of Instruments

Mailbag: “Spectacular in Newark”

October 20, 2008

Dear Michael,

Attention: PIPEDREAMS producer Michael Barone

Hi Michael. I just wanted to drop you a quick note saying that I was at an organ concert last night at the The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark NJ

Organ Specs:
The Gallery and Chancel organs of the Cathedral Basilica were installed in 1955-1956 by the Schantz Organ Company. The organs were rebuilt with tonal alterations in 1989-1990. The Gallery and Chancel organs contain 154 ranks, 193 stops, and 9,513 pipes.

Anyway, the concert was beautiful and the organ magnificent.
The organist mentioned your name and your show before playing the piece by Stephen Paulus, Blithely Breezing Along (Baronian Suite)
The whole concert was awesome. It was my first time hearing Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor BWV 582 live and in person on a real pipe organ and it was amazing.
Pipedreams is my favorite show, I never miss it. I listened the the Cameron Carpenter show 4 times already. I have my computer hooked into my home sound system with subwoofers and it’s just incredible. Cameron is amazing, thanks for that interview with him and that show.
I wish your show was on the radio in NJ but at least I can get the internet stream.

Ryan

Ryan,

I’m glad that you enjoyed your experience at Newark’s Sacred Heart Cathedral...it IS quite a place, and wonderful for its organ opportunities. We played “Blythely Breezing Along” during our own Organ Spectacular concert here in the Twin Cities, too...quite a little bundle of energy.
Keep listening. Hopefully we can get PIPEDREAMS onto some stations in New Jersey before too long.
