Mailbag: “The Magic is in the Mix”

February 26, 2007

Dear Michael,

When looking at specifications, the mixture is described as “derived”. Does this mean that they essentially cobble together the sound from other ranks of pipes otherwise assigned?

Dear Kerm,

That’s right. This gives the functional glitteer of upperwork, but without the ensemble quality (because of different scaling and voicing parameters) of a purpose-built mixture.
In some cases (and acoutics) this derivation can be quite effective, but often it is simply a cost-conscious make-do.
