Mailbag: “Listener’s guide to organ music?”

November 16, 2006

Dear Michael,

I wonder if there is a book of program notes on organ recital and church pieces short of going through all the inclusive larger volumes of music history books and reverence resources?

John Rafoth, organist
Christ Presbyterian Church, Madison, Wisconsin

Dear John,

To my knowledge, there is not a simple ‘listener’s guide’ to organ music, other than what is contained in general classical music listener’s guides, such as Ted Libby’s Building a Classical Music Collection (issued by NPR), and the Penguin Guide to compact discs.

In my experience, the best information is picked up by listening and reading CD booklets. After all, listening is what music is all about. The rest is just talk.

Also, contact the Organ Historical Society online catalog.
