Celebrating the pipe organ, the King of Instruments |
October 27, 2006
Dear Michael,
What is the oldest functional pipe organ that is still being played at least on a semi regular basis, and where is it??
Do you have any plans to be in my state or anywhere near it in the future?
Doug BrownDear Doug,
The oldest functional pipe organ (claimed to have parts dating back to 1390) stands in the Church of Notre Dame de Valere in Sion, Switzerland.
This instrument is featured in regular concerts.
As for my appearance in Indiana, the Organ Historical Society’s national convention next year will center in and around Indianapolis (click on ‘conventions’), and I am likely to be attending some part of that. Otherwise, at present, nothing is scheduled but anything is possible. My public apperances will be noted on the PIPEDREAMS website.
