Celebrating the pipe organ, the King of Instruments

Mailbag: “Hoping for Help”

January 31, 2011

Dear Michael,

Sir, Has anyone ever done a story on the pipe organ in the Scottish Rite Temple in Guthrie, Oklahoma??? It is huge and beautiful instrument and I have heard a few notes on it when I went for a tour. Here is the website.
I hope someone can do a story or feature on this wonderful organ before it falls apart or everyone forgets it. The Temple itself is a beautiful building with stained glass and wonderfully decorated rooms. The mailing address is Guthrie Scottish Rite Masonic Center P.O. Box 70 Guthrie, OK

Mary Jane,

Thanks for information about this. Unfortunately, there are organs of stature everywhere that are in jeopardy. We have a 124-rank 1928 Kimball here in Minneapolis that is in storage awaiting a 'new destiny'. Unfortunately, I cannot keep up with all the new, the old, the abused, the celebrated, the large, the small...but hope that musicians in Oklahoma are able to focus attention on the Guthrie instrument. You should contact John Schwandt at the University of Oklahoma's American Organ Institute.
