Celebrating the pipe organ, the King of Instruments
December 8, Sunday:
Following a 2 o'clock performance by resident musician Carol Williams and the San Diego Children's Choir at Balboa Park, Michael will provide the evening's 'prelude to a centenary' talk during the 6 o'clock Holiday Dinner Gala of the Spreckels Organ Society at the Admiral Kidd Club in San Diego, CA. Reservations for this Holiday Dinner Gala can be made here.
January 11, Saturday:
10–11:30AM – in association with the Twin Cities Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, Pipedreams host Michael Barone introduces a special guest from France, Bertrand Cattiaux, who presents an lavishly illustrated talk ("Six Centuries of French Organ Building") in the UBS Forum of the MPR Headquarters (480 Cedar Street, Saint Paul, MN). The public is welcome but, due to limited seating, pre-registration is requested.
Messr. Cattiaux has been involved in the construction of various new instruments, plus important restorations of instruments at Notre Dame Cathedral (Paris), St. Peter's Cathedral (Poitiers), the chapel of Versailles Palace, the Basilica of St. Sernin (Toulouse) and other organs in Sarlat, Reims, Pithiviers, and St. Ursane (Switzerland). We hope you can attend!
January 19, Sunday:
1:40PM – Michael Barone interviews conductor Dirk Brossé and organ soloists Matt Glandorf, Alan Morrison and Jeffrey Brillhart prior to the 2:30PM concert featuring the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. Works by Handel, Stephen Paulus, Dirk Brossé, Joseph Jongen and Josef Rheinberger provide a capsule overview of the history of the organ concerto from its 18th century beginnings to the present, and showcase the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Pipe Organ by Dobson at Philadelphia's Verizon Hall.
You can 'meet Michael' in places that few have a chance to visit, inside the marvelous, magnificent and monumental Wanamaker Grand Court Organ at Macy's Philadelphia Department Store…via a superb behind-the-scenes visit with Wanamaker Organ curator Curt Mangel, via a detailed DVD that reveals much about this incredible music-making masterpiece.
